Ask EARN

Q: We are interested in sponsoring an apprentice who has a disability, and we want to make sure we do things correctly. We heard that apprenticeship programs must be registered. What does this mean? What else do we need to know about sponsoring a person with a disability?

A: It sounds like you already know that apprenticeship is an excellent way to build a skilled workforce. Apprenticeships may be registered or not. A Registered Apprenticeship Program, or RAP, is a government-certified training program that meets national standards set by the U.S. Department of Labor or state-level apprenticeship agencies and comprises both classwork (called “related instruction”) and on-the-job training. All apprentices must meet the same expectations, and apprentices with disabilities may be entitled to accommodations in the classroom and/or workplace.
