Federal Government as a Model Employer of People with Disabilities: Research-Based Practices and Strategies

Explore research-based strategies to ensure people with disabilities are included as part of federal agency diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) efforts.

In order to achieve the goal of the Federal Government as a model employer of people with disabilities, it is important to consider which employment practices are most effective when recruiting, hiring, retaining and advancing people with disabilities. Results from research at Cornell University’s Yang Tan Institute on Employment and Disability revealed how to improve existing workforce practices in the Federal Government by leveraging three high-impact strategies, including centralizing funding and staff resources for accommodations programs and, analyzing trends in compensation and management. Additionally, the report recommends several strategies to increase representation of people with targeted disabilities in the federal sector.
